A former Venezuelan spy chief has pleaded guilty to drug trafficking just days before the scheduled start of his New York trial — which would have highlighted explosive claims about a cocaine cartel allegedly run by Venezuela’s top military and political leaders.

In August 2018, Mexican investigative journalist Daniel Sánchez started receiving unusual phone calls and text messages about a recently published article. According to Sánchez, the messages came weekly from people who introduced themselves as lawyers and urged him to remove the piece.
